If you don’t plan your life, Jan will ☝🏾
Posting your 2024 INs and OUTs is hot-trend that many are missing out on because they think goal-setting is girly. Stop being goofy, sir – what are your 2024 New Year’s Resolutions?
When did you last have a real plan for a new year? For most, the last time was when it was enforced by an institution (school).
Institutions have intentions. Schools, for example, have curricula, and workplaces have KPIs. The story we tell ourselves about freelancing and entrepreneurship is one of freedom and flexibility. But it's a lie: to truly thrive as an independent, you must master setting intentions.
The Belittled Art of Setting Intentions
People tend to be proud of how UN-intentional they are about the new year.
It's easy to dismiss vision boards and goal-setting as trivial exercises. I don't know if it's because it's a "girly" task (and we know how society devalues femininity), but think about it – when was the last time you actively envisioned your life, set personal goals, and held yourself accountable?
Every year, Jan de Klerk gives you company visions and KPIs that you reach; otherwise, you wouldn't be employed, and guess what? You hit them (or you wouldn't be employed).
Yet, there's a disconnect when it comes to your goals. Why? Because setting intentions is more than just a task; it's a commitment to yourself.
The Entrepreneur's Dilemma: Life Without a Plan
As a freelancer, contract worker or entrepreneur, there's no curriculum to follow, no predefined path or KPIs from Jan.
You're the captain of your ship, and there's no map – you have to create one. Personally, everyone should be mapping their own lives. You can manifest Jan's vision but have not considered our dreams since you got your degree.
The Power of Personal Promises
Setting an intention is like making a promise to yourself. You sit with yourself and define success on your terms in every area of your life. It's easier to belittle personal goal-setting, vision boards and New Year's Resolutions than to develop the discipline of keeping our promises.
Manifesting is not magic – it's reality
Setting clear intentions creates a roadmap, not just for your entrepreneurial journey but YOUR LIFE!
If you need a place to start, think about the following areas of your life:
Work
Finances
Relationships
Health
Hobbies
For each area, ask yourself – what am I starting, and what am I stopping?
At the end of the day, time passes, and you're moving forward in some direction. Maybe choosing your direction will make life feel better than just aimlessly drifting past your dreams while steady sailing towards Jan's new German-spec Mercedes Benz.
Stop being goofy, sir – what are your New Year's resolutions?
